Lustige Witwe, Die ('Merry Widow, The') back

Description

Premiere performance: 1905

„The Merry Widow“ is Franz Lehár’s most popular and successful operetta.

Due to class differences, Count Danilo is not allowed to marry his love Hanna, a girl from the country side. Therefore Hanna marries the rich Banker Glavari, who unexpectedly dies during the wedding night. A rich widowed lady now, Hanna meets Danilo again at a glittering ball night in the embassy of Pontevedrian in Paris. Every nobleman wants to marry her, not because of her beauty or intelligence but because of her wealth. Danilo still loves Hanna, but refuses to marry her as he does not want to create the impression that he wants her back only because of her prosperity. By using a trick, Hanna convinces him being without money and finally they can embrace each other happily.

Rather unusual for a woman at that time, Hanna is taking the lead during the whole play in all it’s complexity. Not least because of political allusions and the wonderful melodies and songs, the play belongs to one of the most famous operettas all over the world.
